      GREGORY O'BRIEN is primarily a poet and painter, and is also a Curator at City Gallery Wellington and the author of or a contributor to many landmark art books, including Lands and Deeds, Hotere Out the Black Window, Rosalie Gascoigne Plain Air, Parihaka The Art of Passive Resistance and Welcome to the South Seas Contemporary New Zealand Art. 2. Hotere’s has a sense of humour (eg making a whole series out of old windows, or a burnt out ship). 3. Hotere’s was ineffable to the end; he so rarely every described even what the theme of the work was about, and so he let the work speak. 4. Hotere was prepared to share generously in partnership with other artists eg Culbert.

The book uses poetry by. Ralph Hotere gained prominence mostly for his Black Paintings. His other famous works are "Black Phoenix", "Jerusalem, Jerusalem", "This might be a double cross jack".

Hotere's works are represented in every major public and private collection in New Zealand and in art museums throughout the world.

My curatorial mission was to locate a number of paintings for the Out the Black Window exhibition, which was to open shortly in Wellington. Hotere had left a note on the kitchen table asking me to call his cellphone regarding one particular work.

He was on a golf course in Hawke’s Bay when he answered my call. Ralph Hotere offers good advice for looking at his paintings when he says, "I have provided for the spectator a starting point, which upon contemplation may become a nucleus revealing sources of new possibilities."
